Why Self-Advocacy Instruction is a Must in Speech Therapy featured image

Did you know that self-advocacy is one of the most vital skills students need not just in school, but in life as well? Yet, it’s often overlooked in the educational setting. As speech and language pathologists working in schools, we have a unique opportunity to empower students to advocate for themselves.

Why is Self-Advocacy Important?

Self-advocacy enables students to understand and communicate their needs effectively. It builds confidence, promotes autonomy, and fosters a growth mindset. Research tells us that students who developed self-advocacy skills were twice as likely to achieve their academic goals compared to those who didn’t.

How can we Foster Self-Advocacy Skills?

Understand your students: Each student is unique. Identify their strengths, weaknesses, interests, and learning style. This understanding will help you individualize your approach to build their self-advocacy skills.

Open communication lines: Encourage students to express their feelings and thoughts. Provide a safe and non-judgmental environment where they feel comfortable sharing their experiences.

Set realistic goals: Help students set achievable goals. Celebrate progress, no matter how small, to boost their confidence and motivation.
